The Year of China

exchange between Europeen artists and Chinese artists
Carole Monterrain

By questioning our daily life in this social and economic climate I’m inspired to use various techniques and mediums such as photography, sculpture and video.
Society dictates to us what is beautiful, good, bad and ugly, imposing it’s advertising bill boards, its stimulates desire and dissatisfaction, puts across legislation against begging in touristic cities Society acts out the sorcerer’s apprentice with the breeding farm’s animals.
Therefore, I decided to play the role of actress in my own daily life. I direct myself, drawing a parallel to the advertising posters in which the woman’s body is used as a consumer tool. But this is to play the devil’s advocate which is against the law. To wear a tee shirt printed “EN FONCTIONNEMENT” to sell sodas and sweets is a survival act. Giving tramps picture postcards, portraits of themselves is an idea of how we perceive “those” other people around us. Sculpturing with battery chicken bones is an game of gathering memories for our future. Piling up publicity packaging boxes to build skyscrapers is a game of construction around the grandiloquence of capitalism.

The Jouy Wall – Marseille, September 2003 – Installation in situ

On a straight wall, tense and cold, some holes are hammered. These orifices are arranged quincunx then filled with cameos of plaster. Finally the wall is recovered with white paint.
These lockets are describing some scenes of my erotic life. The heroine, myself, helped by one of her partners demonstrates some of her love making positions.
The dialogue is set on equality without any power struggle or physical domination. Bodies are mixing and harmonizing.
A camouflage then appears between this occlusion’s wall and the paint, which, through the years, let a veil, then another until we can make out only certain details of the relief.

EN FONCTIONNEMENT - WORKING - January 2001
Vidéo performance, 6 minutes 58 secondes, Marseille,

This video is a testimony of a performance carried out on the 27th of January 2001 on the Canebière, Marseille, illustrating the wearing of a tee-shirt printed with the words « en fonctionnement » (« working »). There, I’m a substitute for the vending machines installed in our environnement.
« The machine, which should relieve human beings from painful labour, in fact generates, inequality, misery and social exclusion in the richest nations even in times of prosperity » from an article of René Passet (le Monde Diplomatique, February 2001) en response to the global social forum of Porto Alegre
